UNIVERSITY of the East may still be winless in the UAAP Season 80 after four games but head coach Derrick Pumaren is not quite ready to push the panic button.
The Red Warriors dropped another blowout, this time to the league leading Ateneo Blue Eagles.
“I must say na hindi naman panic. But if we want to have a better performance this season, we have to make our move It seems like we have to play with a sense of urgency cause we’re 0-4 and we’re playing top teams,” said Pumaren.
“We just have to get our acts together. So far it’s one guy coming up, pero dapat lahat. We need total team effort and that’s what we don’t have right now,” he added.
Things won’t get easier for the Red Warriors when they resume play next week as they battle the Adamson Falcons and University of the Philippines.
“The problem is also that we’re not playing as a team. We run away from what we’re doing, puro kami dribble, dun kami nagkakaproblema,” Pumaren continued.
“Hopefully we play with a sense of urgency cause it’s a tough schedule for us next week.”
They were actually in the game against the Blue Eagles, trimming the lead to single digit entering the final quarter.
But when Alvin Pasaol had to rest, the Blue Eagles pounced on a headless Red Warriors team to break the game wide open.
“Despite of how we’re playing we’re still right there in the game but in the fourth quarter, sometimes we have to make a decision, we have to pull out somebody then all of a sudden we lose control of the game, that’s what happened kanina,” rued Pumaren.
“Nakadikit, we gave a guy a break then the momentum shifts to the other side. As I’ve said, we need contributions from all players.”
Given the lack of personnel, Pumaren says that it’s can’t be Pasaol alone – he needs to get the usual numbers from his veterans, particularly Clark Derige who struggled heavily against the Eagles.
“Pasaol played well, shot better than his previous games but Derige nawala naman ngayon. Hindi pwedeng mawawala, dapat lahat sila. Alam mong argabyado, wala nang import so kailangan magtulungtulungan.”
