'Marked man' Alvin Pasaol needs to add to offensive repertoire, says Derrick Pumaren

UNIVERSITY of the East coach Derrick Pumaren said Alvin Pasaol needs to add to his bag of tricks if and when he returns to play in the UAAP next season.

A heavyset 6-foot-3 forward who can force his way under the hoop as well as shoot from beyond the arc, Pasaol managed to put up huge performances, including a season-high 49 points.

But his offense has been limited in the Warriors’ past few games as he became a 'marked man' for the defense.

“I think he should be ready because he’s already a marked man,” Pumaren said. “Kumbaga sa food, kailangan niya ng konting fusion, konting timpla kasi he’s a marked man. Do things that they have seen this season. He has to come out with a different arsenal.”

UE is out of the semis picture, but Pumaren can take solace in Pasaol’s transformation into one of the premier scorers in the college game.

“Of course it’s Alvin’s 49 points,” said Pumaren when asked about the positive takeaways from this season. “I’m proud with the way he played, yung true potential niya came out this season.”

Pumaren is now focusing on the final game of the campaign against the 0-13 University of Santo Tomas on Sunday.

Aside from trying to end the season on a good note, the veteran head coach definitely doesn’t want the ignominy of becoming the only team to be beaten by the lowly Tigers this season.

“You're only as good as your last game and that's how you wanna end. We know also that UST is hungry, they want to get their first win. Even though they are 0-13 they are a lot better than their standing right now,” Pumaren continued.

“We are still going to play hard, we are still going for the win. That's what I expect them to do on Sunday.”
