LA Salle's much-awaited reunion with coach Derrick Pumaren will have to drag a little bit longer as the veteran coach takes precaution before trooping back his wards in Taft.

"Safety first," quipped the multi-titled mentor who returns to the Green Archers after almost three decades even after news of the potential resumption of practices for collegiate teams broke out.

The development couldn't be any more welcome for Pumaren, who was in the initial stages of introducing his system to La Salle back in March before the outbreak of COVID-19 forced everyone to retreat to their own homes.

Nine players, including Senegalese center Amadou Ndiaye, are still overseas, although they are already aware of the developments here and are ready to return once Pumaren calls them.

Aside from that, local players are also currently in their hometowns, with Justine Baltazar in Mabalacat, Pampanga and Aljun Melecio in Valencia City, Bukidnon.

Still, Pumaren won't make the call until guidelines from the UAAP and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) are approved.

"We are all waiting for this because the boys are excited to get back on the floor," he said. "But we can't get carried away. We still need to wait for the guidelines and protocols from CHED before we finally head back to practice."
