THE so-called ‘Jerie Pingoy rule’ has reached the Senate.
The Senate Committee on Youth, Women, and Family Relations will hold a hearing on Thursday to tackle the controversial new two-year residency rule for high school transferees in the UAAP.
Senator Pia Cayetano, the committee chairman and a staunch critic of the new rule, has called the meeting to be held at 2 p.m. in which she has invited UAAP officials and top college athletes to attend.
The committee hearing will discuss the amendments to the UAAP residency requirement for high school transferees which has been increased from one to two years.
The contentious rule came on the heels of news that two-time UAAP juniors MVP Pingoy of Far Eastern University has decided to move to Ateneo in college.
The residency period for foreign transferees has also been lengthened from one to two years, delaying Cebu star Ben Mbala's transfer from Southwestern University to De La Salle.
On the other hand, the residency period for Fil-foreign players based overseas has been cut from two to one year.
Cayetano has already criticized the said rule on her Twitter account.
“I will continue to fight the #NewUAAPRule,” Cayetano wrote on March 13.
Cayetano also wrote an open letter on her blog mydailyrace.com to criticize the new rule.
“I will end this letter by citing a provision in our Bill of Rights against cruel and unjust punishment. For an athlete, this two-year residency rule is cruel and unjust punishment!,” Cayetano wrote.
