JERON Teng and Thomas Torres sizzled in the first half to help De La Salle build a big lead early on the way to a 72-64 win over University of the East on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
Teng and Torres had 14 points each in the first half, leading the Green Archers to a 41-30 halftime advantage that they never relinquished despite a strong third-quarter run by the Red Warriors.
The Green Archers, who led by as many as 13 points, improved their mark to 5-4 win-loss) to take solo third spot in the team standings while the Red Warriors dropped to 3-6.
Teng went on to finish with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists while Torres added 15 points on 2-of-5 shooting from three-point range for the Green Archers.
The Red Warriors began the third quarter with an 8-0 run to close in but La Salle had a ready answer - a nine-point spurt capped by a Joshua Torralba three-pointer that brought the lead back to 13 at 71-58.
“Hard-fought game. Even if we had the lead, UE fought back. It’s a good thing that the players were able to get their composure back and finish the game well,” said La Salle coach Juno Sauler.
Larry Muyang had nine points and 11 rebounds for La Salle, which also got eight points each from Prince Rivero and Torralba.
Renz Palma and Chris Javier each had 14 points for the Red Warriors.
