LA Salle libero Dawn Macandili is primed and ready to take the lead when the Lady Spikers start their title retention bid in the UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament.
Almost a month before the start of the much awaited volleyball season, the incoming fourth year defense specialist has been working double time to fill the void left by Ara Galang, Mika Reyes and Cyd Demecillo.
Even after she was named MVP in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference, where a La Salle-backed F2 Logistics copped the title in July, Macandili has not stopped working her her game and her leadership skills.
"Tina-try ko lang 'yung best ko na maging good role model lalo na sa mga bata kasi karamihan sa amin ngayon bata or bago sa team. I just try to do my best so hopefully they also do their best," she said.
"'Yung weakness ko talaga before is 'yung kumpiyansa," she admitted. "Lagi ko lang sinasabi ngayon sa mga bata kong teammates na try talaga nila 'yung best nila, na makuha 'yung kumpiyansa nila para pagdating sa game, buo na 'yung loob nila."
But the soft-spoken libero was quick to add that although she has gained her confidence, she’s leaving no room for complacency and backing up her encouraging words with inspiring action.
Macandili would often stay on after practice for a couple of minutes at the gym trying to improve her game.
"Marami pa akong kailangan i-improve, hindi naman nawawalan nang room para doon," she said. "A lot of polishing and adding sa skills na kulang ako before para mas makatulong sa team."
The UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament starts on February 4.
