WITH University of the Philippines down by 19 points midway through the second quarter against an inspired University of Santo Tomas side, Maroons assistant coach Ricky Dandan simply lost his cool.
After series of botched defensive assignments and an overall lack of intensity on the defensive end left Dandan totally frustrated on the sidelines.
“Wala kayong depensa. Dumepensa kayo,” said Dandan, shouting from the sidelines. “Puro tayo papogi.”
Head coach Bo Perasol doesn't disagree with his assistant's assessment.
The Maroons gave up a total of 31 points in the first quarter and things got no better from there as they suffered an 86-72 beating at the hands of the Maroons.
“Oo, oo, oo,” responded Perasol when asked if he agreed with Dandan, a former UP head coach.
“When we came out of the dugout, I told them that who we are in practice when we execute is different from we go out there with the limelight and the people. It’s part of getting used to it. Because of the parang adulation, e ang galing niyo, parang gumaganoon,” he added.
“They thought they were just going to roll over and win against UST. You can’t take anything away from UST. They played very well,” he added.
Perasol said Dandan’s outburst was no longer new to his players and the third-year UP coach said his players totally understand the situation.
“Coach Ricky is in charge of our defense. Parang he lost it na why can’t you do it if you can do it. As young players, they just have to understand that these coaches are trying to help them,” said Perasol.
“They’re just trying to tell you, 'You’re better than that.' They all know the personality of coach Ricky so that is nothing that is new to them.”
