ANOTHER University of the Philippines ace is stepping away from the Maroons stable as Cyril Gonzales has decided to take his talents back to where his collegiate career began — with the Mapua Cardinals in the NCAA.

Following Luis Pablo's move to La Salle the decommittals of top high school prospects Jared Bahay and Chris Hubilla, it was Gonzales' turn to say goodbye through a farewell team gathering, and in a parting note he shared on his Instagram page on Saturday evening.

"The past few years have shown me what it’s like to be a true Fighting Maroon. UP wasn’t just a phase but a piece of my heart. My thoughts are filled with a deep sense of respect and thankfulness as I sit here, realizing that my chapter fighting for the Maroons is coming to a close," said Gonzales.

"Despite all the highs and lows, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to become part of the rich history of a prestigious university. Everyone’s togetherness has made all the difference, and for that, I will always be grateful. Salamat, Unibersidad ng Pilipinas," he added.
The defensive guard's college career started in Mapua where he dished out 9.6 points, 2.8 boards, 1.9 dimes, and 1.4 steals. This, before opting to join UP over a return to his high school team National University during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, his brief UP stint saw him play limited minutes as he tallied roughly five points in 15 minutes per game during Season 85 and further dropped to just three points in seven minutes per game come Season 86.
