CYRIL Gonzales has had a change of heart and instead of returning to National University, will now head to University of the Philippines.

Team insiders confirmed the development on Thursday as the exodus of players from the NU basketball program continues.

Gonzales spent the past year with Mapua where the 6-foot guard showed his worth last NCAA Season 95, posting 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 23 minutes of play in his rookie year.

He was a key contibutor for the Cardinals' sixth-place finish on an even 9-9 win-loss card last year.

Last March, Gonzales decided to return to NU in hopes of a reunion with his former coach with the Bullpups, Goldwin Monteverde, who was then promoted to the seniors team.

However, the departure of bluechip recruits Carl Tamayo, Gerry Abadiano, and Kevin Quiambao to rival schools caused a domino effect, which led to Monteverde's sacking last Monday.

Instead, Gonzales will follow Tamayo and Abadiano in the Fighting Maroons camp. The trio were part of NU-Nazareth School's UAAP Season 81 juniors basketball championship.

Gonzales will have to redshirt for a year before he gets cleared to play come UAAP Season 84.
