Complacency is Tamaraws' No. 1 enemy, says Romeo

    Jul 18, 2013
“May sakit kami na kapag nananalo kami, nagre-relax kami lalo na sa practice. Nire-remind kami ni coach na wala pa kaming na-prove hangga’t hindi namin makuha ‘yung goal namin,” says FEU star Terrence Romeo. Jerome Ascano

FAR Eastern University star Terrence Romeo said complacency is the team's biggest enemy as the Tamaraws enjoy an impressive start under new coach Nash Racela in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

The Tamaraws are getting closer to their best start in three years after winning their fifth straight game at the expense of National University Bulldogs, 87-83, on Wednesday.

The Morayta-based team is now just two wins shy of matching its 2010 record when it completed a seven-game sweep of the first round. Ironically, that season marked the year RR Garcia and Romeo were named league MVP and Rookie of the Year, respectively.

Romeo, the current leading scorer of the league with 22.6 points average per outing, admitted there had been times during the season when the Tamaraws tend to relax in their preparations as they try to keep their unblemished record intact.

And he noted how Racela has repeatedly time and again warned the team not to slack off in training.

“May sakit kami na kapag nananalo kami, nag-re-relax kami lalo na sa practice,” said the 21-year-old Romeo. “Nire-remind kami ni coach na wala pa kaming na-prove hangga’t hindi namin makuha ‘yung goal namin.”

Such was the case in their last outing when the Tamaraws narrowly escaped the Bulldogs, whom they led by as much as 20 points in the third quarter before pulling off a four-point win.

“I always say it’s how you finish,” said Racela. “I think we just have to be consistent. We just have to learn from this game. We didn’t finish well. Good thing, Terrence was able to make that lay-up in the end to secure the win.”

Romeo finished the game with 24 points including a 6-of-10 clip from behind-the-arc.

“Nag-extra shooting ako kaya nag-improve ang shooting ko,” Romeo related.

But the FEU guard expects Racela to always be in their ears especially after the escape win over the Bulldogs.

“Everytime nananalo kami, hindi niya pinaparamdam sa amin na mag-relax. Lalo pa niya kaming pinu-push,” Romeo said of the Tamaraws’ young mentor.
