CJ CANSINO has been compared to Scottie Thompson on online basketball forums due to his rebounding prowess, and his eyes light up when the idea is brought up.
"Ako kasi, Ginebra fan ako eh. Since birth, lahing Ginebra talaga, so nung rookie year ni Scottie Thompson, idol ko na siya kasi ang ganda ng pinakita niya," said Cansino.
"Kailan lang may kinuhanan siya ng rebound na import," looking back at Ginebra's game against Rain or Shine in Lucena where the third-year guard took a rebound from opposing import Terrence Watson.
"Tumatak talaga sa isip ko na kung si Scottie Thompson nga kaya yun, bakit ako hindi?" he said.
Through nine games, Cansino has hauled in 10.6 rebounds, the most for the Growling Tigers.
The 19-year-old rookie did show his best Thompson impression, grabbing 18 rebounds to go with his eight points and five assists on Sunday in a loss to National University.
"Yun kasi yung naging role ko para sa team. Maliliit kami at hindi ganoon kalaki yung mga bigs namin so kailangan ko talagang pumasok sa loob para makatulong ako sa rebound," he said.
Cansino's efforts did show in the statline, with UST winning the rebounding battle against NU, 53 to 41.
Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to net the win as the Growling Tigers fell to the Bulldogs, 69-61 to see their three-game win streak come to an end.
"Masakit pero move on na lang kasi maganda naman yung nilaro namin. Hindi lang binigay yung panalo sa amin," he said, taking the initiative to bounce back in time for UST's next game against UE next Sunday. "Sinasabi ko rin sa sarili ko na kailangan ko pa iimprove yung sarili ko."
