CJ Cansino says Ricci Rivero - among all suitors - convinced him to pick UP

How Ricci Rivero - among all suitors - recruited CJ Cansino to UP
    Aug 22, 2020

RICCI Rivero was a big reason for CJ Cansino's decision to choose University of the Philippines among his bevy of suitors.

The 20-year-old guard told Anong Tunay?! of the influence Rivero had in him throughout this process as he suddenly found himself without a team following his unceremonious exit from University of Santo Tomas.

"Magkaibigan talaga kami kahit dati pa. Hindi lang kita sa social media," he said.

Cansino added that when the news broke out of his ouster, Rivero was the first one to reach out to him.

"Yung time na tinanggal ako, nakausap ko siya kasi same situation kami. Alam niya ang feeling," he said.

Rivero, after all, found himself on the same boat as in 2018, he found himself out of La Salle after two years in the seniors team.

It wasn't long before the one-time UAAP Mythical Team member found a home in UP.

That's why Rivero can relate to the situation of Cansino and urged him to consider Diliman as his next destination.

"Nung ni-recruit niya ako, sabi niya, 'J, pwede ka dito.' So sabi ko, tingnan natin kung ok yan. Siya yung masasabi nating nag-recruit sa akin papunta ng UP," he said. "Kapag same situation kayo, may connection talaga."

Rivero was also one of those who joined in the recruitment fun on Twitter on Thursday night, writing, "yknow what’s UP @cjcansino"

Like Rivero when he went to UP, Cansino will also have two years for the maroon-and-white, although with the former playing his final year next season, the two won't have a chance to team up together for the Fighting Maroons.

It doesn't mean, though, that they can't test each other during practices, with the boatload of talented players and new recruits in UP presenting what is expected to be intense training sessions once they get back on the court.

"Excited na ako kasi alam kong magiging masaya yun, magiging competitive yun, at matutulungan namin ang isa't isa," said Cansino, who can play for the Fighting Maroons come UAAP Season 84.

"Kapag nagawa namin yun as individuals, sundin lang namin yung role namin sa team, kahit maraming superstars, magkaroon lang kami ng connection sa isa't isa at magamit namin yung galing namin sa tama, makakamit namin yung championship na hinahanap namin."
