FORMER Ginebra star Chito Loyzaga emerged as one of the top candidates to become the next athletic director of National University following the resignation of Junel Baculi effective end of the school year.
Nilo Ocampo, NU representative to the UAAP board, said Baculi is stepping down from his post as the school's longtime athletic director plans to pursue a return to coaching.
“He really wants to go back to his passion which is coaching,” said Ocampo. “Marami rin siyang naitulong sa amin and the school would like to thank him for his contributions.”
Prior to becoming athletic director of the school, Baculi served as coach of national teams that won gold medals in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) championship and the Southeast Asian Games.
His last coaching stint was with GlobalPort in the PBA.
Baculi is leaving the school shortly after the Bulldogs ended a six-decade title drought by winning the UAAP men’s basketball championship last season.
Ocampo said the school has yet to name a replacement for Baculi.
But Spin.ph learned from sources that Loyzaga is a ‘strong candidate’ to take over the post and, in turn, represent the school in the UAAP board.
Loyzaga served as commissioner of the UAAP basketball tournament during the 2013 season. He is currently a consultant of PBA ballclub Blackwater.
He was recently named among the late additions to the 40 Greatest Players list of the PBA and once served as commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
