THE search for a commissioner continued for UAAP Season 77 host University of the East after Chino Trinidad declined the school’s offer to handle the day-to-day operations of the basketball tournament set to unfurl on July 12.
Trinidad, a former commissioner of the PBL, told Spin.ph he has asked officials of UE to take his name out of candidates list as he felt there isn't enough time to implement needed reforms especially in officiating with the season less than two months away.
The veteran broadcaster said he also feared he may not be able to give the UAAP job his undivided attention as he his committed to seeing through his ‘Pagpupugay’ project of honoring Philippine sports legends.
“I have decided to ask you to exclude my name from the UAAP commissionership shortlist,” Trinidad said in his message to UE officials, a portion of which was posted on his Facebook page.
“My heart and soul is currently on my project ‘Pagpupugay Sa Isang Daang Taon ng Philippine Sports’ and I won’t be able to give full attention if in case the task of running the UAAP is handed over to me,” Trinidad said.
Trinidad, however, said he is open to helping the UAAP have its own pool of referees, something he had suggested in an interview with Spin.ph in order to address the problems of officiating.
With nearly one month to go before the start of the basketball tournament, UE has yet to appoint a basketball commissioner for Season 77.
Andy Jao, who like Trinidad was a former PBL commissioner, had previously declined the offer, sources said, but the longtime TV analyst is now being asked to reconsider his decision.
A former commissioner of a collegiate league stressed the urgency to hire a commissioner at this point in time.
“The earlier, the better because the commissioner will have to determine who will be the pool of referees. He will also meet with the coaches,” said the commissioner who refused to be named.
