THE vacant University of the Philippines coaching job has attracted the interest of some familiar names as the school begins the process of choosing the next coach of the men’s basketball team.
Sources told Spin.ph that Rain or Shine assistant coach Caloy Garcia, former Barako Bull head coaches Siot Tanquincen and Bong Ramos, GlobalPort interim head coach Eric Gonzales, and UP high school coach Allan Gregorio were among those who applied for the UP job.
Also expressing interest in the position, sources said, were Raymond Celis, Rensy Bajar, Beaujing Acot, and Joe Ward, currently the strength and conditioning coach of the Maroons who is also the acting coach while the school searches for replacement for Rey Madrid.
Another source said UP officials have also talked to former San Beda coach and now Ginebra assistant Frankie Lim about the job vacancy.
Sources said the school already began interviewing the applicants this week through the members of the search committee led by UP team manager Dan Palami and former University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio.
UP is in search of a new coach after Madrid stepped down after the end of Season 77.
The new head coach will inherit a UP men’s basketball program that has struggled over the years. Last year, the Maroons broke a 27-game losing skid in the UAAP with a rare win over Adamson.
