RYAN Buenafe’s best just wasn’t good enough.
Despite coming through with a career-game, Buenafe still failed in his bid to give Ateneo its first win of the new UAAP men’s basketball season as the reigning champion Blue Eagles fell against Far Eastern Tamaraws in overtime, 79-75, Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Buenafe torched the Tamaraws for 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, numbers that all went for naught as the Katipunan-based school suffered their second straight loss.
“Kulang 'yung ginawa ko kanina (kahit career high ako), kasi talo kami," he later said to Spin.ph.
The former NCAA junior MVP went 5-of-9 from three-point range and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the stripe as he doubled his effort on the offensive end in trying to fill in the huge void left by injured teammate Kiefer Ravena.
Ravena is indefinitely out of Ateneo’s roster due to an ankle injury.
“Kailangan mag-step up eh, wala pa si Kiefer (Ravena),” said Buenafe. “llan lang kaming
beterano. Kulang pa nga ang ginawa ko kanina kasi talo (kami). Siguro double effort pa
Buenafe admitted the overtime loss to the Tamaraws hurts as the Eagles almost pulled the rug from under FEU even without their star player.
"Masakit sa lahat (na players) kasi nandoon na eh, na kaya na naming manalo," he added.
Come the next game, Buenafe knows not only he will have to step up, but the rest of the Eagles as well as they have no less than bitter nemesis De La Salle Green Archers for opponents.
"Sa Sunday all out na kaming lahat. Di lang ako ang dapat mag-step up, pati 'yung mga sophomores at juniors," he said. "Lalo pa at La Salle ang kalaban. 0-2 na kami kaya kailangan talaga namin manalo.”
