WITH Louie Vigil and Jam Sheriff now ineligible, University of Santo Tomas coach Boy Sablan is now counting on the holdovers to step up even as he adds a recruit from Zamboanga and another from Cavite to the Tigers pool.
Sablan confirmed Vigil and Sheriff will no longer play for the Growling Tigers after the UAAP adjusted its age limit from 25 to 24 starting this season.
“Si Vigil scorer eh. Saan ko hahabulin ’yung 10 to 12 points a game?” said Sablan.
Until the UAAP imposed the new rule, Vigil, who actually averaged 9.3 points for the Growling Tigers last season, was expected to become one of the Tigers’ leaders after the exit of Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, and Karim Abdul.
The newly-appointed UST coach, however, said there is no sense crying over spilled milk and he is now focused on forming a competitive squad for Season 79.
“Nung dumating ako, wala na sila. Kung sino ’yung nandiyan, ’yun ang pagpipilian ko,” said Sablan.
Kent Lao backstops a relatively young Tigers lineup, which also has Embons Bonleon, Marvin Lee, and Renzo Subido.
“Basically, sino ang magiging player mo na mag-iistep up, ‘yun ang magiging tanong talaga. Sila na lang ’yung naiwan pero gagawin namin ang lahat. Pagtutulungan namin ito and hopefully, by God’s grace, pinapanalangin ko na may magandang mangyari sa team. May purpose kaya ako nandito,” said Sabla.
