GLOBALPORT team manager Bonnie Tan says he has not been approached by University of Sto. Tomas officials, but he would consider it if offered the Tigers coaching job.
"I was surprised by it but of course I am deeply honored that I am being considered by my alma mater," said Tan as SPIN.PH reached out to confirm the news
"I am not closing doors. They haven't approached me after the season ended for UST. But if they offer the coaching job to our group, then it's something that we would definitely consider," he added.
Citing sources, the Manila Bulletin and the People's Journal reported that the former Lyceum Pirates coach and now Batang Pier manager is being considered for the Tigers coaching job.
UST let coach Boy Sablan go following a 1-13 season and 4-24 overall.
A source said that a group within the Tigers camp had reached out to him while the season was ongoing, asking the former UST player to submit a resume for the coaching job. Tan, however, declined out of respect to Boy Sablan and the team, and to his group as well which includes former UST head coach Pido Jarencio.
There were earlier reports of a possible Jarencio comeback at UST, but with Globalport assigning him as head coach anew, Tan could be a top candidate.
Tan last coached for Lyceum in 2014, steering the Pirates to an 8-10 record, the best season for the Pirates before their breakout season under coach Topex Robinson.
Since then, Tan has focused on GlobalPort's managerial job while organizing the recently concluded Metro Basketball Tournament.
