UNIVERSITY of the East will no longer have Bonbon Batiller in its pool of players, head coach Derrick Pumaren confirmed to SPIN.ph on Thursday.
Pumaren said Batiller has left the Red Warriors lineup in the offseason after problems with his academics had the promising guard being being left out of the UE roster.
“Yes, wala na siya because of academics,” said Pumaren, declining to go into details.
Pumaren said he encouraged Batiller to continue his studies at UE, but the cager decided to leave the school and head home to the province.
“Sabi ko tapusin niya pag-aaral niya, umuwi pa rin,” said Pumaren.
Batiller was one of the solid contributors for the Red Warriors last season, averaging 9.8 points, four rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
Batiller was one of Pumaren’s recruits when the veteran coach began handling the UE men’s basketball team in 2014, and he was the leading scorer for UE with an average of 11.1 points in Season 78.
Pumaren admitted Batiller’s loss is crucial to UE’s build-up for the coming season of the UAAP, but the veteran mentor said the Red Warriors will just have to adjust to his absence.
“Siyempre malaking kawalan siya but we just have to live with it,” Pumaren said.
