FORMER Ateneo coach Bo Perasol is staying in collegiate basketball as he takes over the head coaching job at his alma mater University of the Philippines, with the official announcement set to take place as early as Thursday.
Perasol and UP officials remained tight-lipped about the development, but a source confirmed that the former Ateneo coach has already agreed to the terms and will take the reins at UP from Rensy Bajar.
It will be a homecoming for Perasol, who played for UP during the early 1990s before venturing into coaching.
During his time with Ateneo, Perasol had big shoes to fill as he took over Norman Black after winning the team’s fifth UAAP title in 2012. The former Air21 and Powerade coach had a respectable 27-18 win-loss record with the Blue Eagles but his contract was not renewed for this coming season despite reaching the Final Four.
Talks have been going on between Perasol and UP since early this year, but the former PBA coach said last February that they are only in the exploratory stage. Former Barako Bull coach Bong Ramos was also considered for the post, said a source.
Perasol takes over the UP program that won just three games in Season 78 despite a promising 2-0 start.
