ATENEO officials insist the Blue Eagles still do not have a coach, denying a tweet by national coach Chot Reyes implying that the reigning champions may have already picked someone to replace Norman Black on the bench.
Reyes appeared to have inside knowledge of who is next in line in the Ateneo coaching job based on what he wrote on Saturday morning in his Twitter account @coachot.
“Sa Lakers unknown pa pero sa Eagles alam na :) hindi alumnus #theAteneoWay,” Reyes wrote.
The Los Angeles Lakers fired coach Mike Brown on Friday.
Former MBA star Alex Compton is the lone non-alumnus who is a candidate for the head coaching job, with Ateneo assistant coaches Sandy Arespacochaga and Jamike Jarin as the others being considered to replace Black, who moved to Talk 'N Text in the PBA after guiding the Eagles to five straight titles.
However, Ateneo team manager Paolo Trillo insisted that no coach has been installed, adding that he will have a meeting with Ateneo president Jett Villarin this weekend to discuss about who will take over.
“Still no news regarding Ateneo coach. Fr. Jett is arriving today (Saturday). We will discuss with him over the weekend,” said Trillo.
“Siguro by Monday, I’ll have a better idea,” Trillo added.
Trillo reacted to Reyes’ tweet saying: “I don’t know where coach Chot is getting his news, kasi wala pa talaga.”
Ateneo athletic director Ricky Palou also said that no coach has been hired to replace Black.
“Wala pa, siguro by next week,” said Palou.
When informed about Reyes’ tweet, Palou said: “Wala pa eh, wala nga 'yung presidente namin dito, he is out of the country. How can Chot know that na hindi pa namin alam?”
