BOBBY Ray Parks delivered the usual numbers and Henri Betayene came up with a double-double as National University downed University of the East 83-74 in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Parks had 21 points, six rebounds and eight assists while Betayene scored 11 points and hauled down 12 rebounds in the absence of countryman Emmanuel Mbe, who is nursing a sore hip.

NU recorded its sixth win in 10 outings to remain within striking distance of La Salle, which currently sits in fourth spot with a 6-3 win-loss card.

“From now on, all our games are important,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano. “We want to run our own race. We are just focused on our goal and not think about the standings."

Jeoffrey Javillonar added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

NU held a 15-point lead midway in the fourth but UE launched a 15-3 run to close in, 67-70, with three minutes to play.

But the Bulldogs got some breathing room as Joshua Alolino converted a three-pointer nearing the two-minute mark for a 74-67 lead.

“We struggled when the game came down to the last few minutes. It’s a good thing that the other players stepped up,” Altamirano said.

“It’s a good win for us coming from a tough loss,” said Altamirano, whose team was coming off a 57-68 loss to University of Santo Tomas in overtime.

    NU (83) – Parks 21, Javillonar 11, Betayene 11, Alolino 10, Rono 9, Neypes 8, De Guzman 7, Villamor 6, Singh 0, Rosario 0, Labing-isa 0, Khobuntin 0.
