Baterbonia's remains to undergo autopsy as NBI, CIDG take over

In a statement, Ateneo vowed to be there for the grieving families every step of the way

RENE Baterbonia's remains will undergo autopsy upon the request of his family.

Ateneo issued a statement on Tuesday providing an update on the situation as the bodies of Baterbonia and Divine Adili have been transported to the Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City on Tuesday.

"At the request of Rene's parents, an autopsy will be conducted. The University, through Arlington, has coordinated with the appropriate authorities, including the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), to facilitate this process," the statement read.

"When Rene's parents and brother arrived from Davao City this afternoon, they were met at Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory by University President Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, who conveyed the condolences and prayers of the entire Ateneo community."

Adili, on the other hand, will be returned to Nigeria "in keeping with family and cultural practices that are important to them."

"The University is assisting the family in the necessary arrangements and is awaiting the written authorization required to begin processing the relevant documentation," the statement furthered.

Members of the men's basketball team have also returned from Aurora on Tuesday and underwent psychological processing and counseling sessions which were facilitated by the College Guidance Office.

"We understand the grief, pain, and many questions and concerns that members of our community may be experiencing. As we continue to accompany the families, the team, and all those affected, we ask for pataience, compassion, and prayers for everyone who is carrying the burden of this loss," the statement read.

"The University remains committed to caring for the Baterbonia and Adili families, supporting the team and coaching staff, and pursuing a careful and thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy."
