DEFENDING champion Ateneo and National University remained unbeaten in the men’s badminton competition of the 75th UAAP at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall on Sunday.
The Blue Eagles dominated University of Santo Tomas, 4-1, as reigning MVP Tobi Gadi led the romp by posting a 21-12, 25-14 win over Benjude Cajefe in the opening singles.
Justin Natividad overcame Rjay Ormilla, 21-12, 17-21, 21-15, in the second singles, while Patrick Natividad downed Salvador Kapunan, 21-12, 21-15, in the other singles play.
The Natividads whipped Ormilla and Kapunan to win the first doubles, 21-14, 21-18, before the Tigers avoided a shutout as Cajefe and Paul John Pantig defeated Gadi and rookie Mico Mallilin, 21-10, 21-19, in the second doubles match.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs shut down University of the Philippines, 5-0.
Andrei Babad beat Ethan Joshua Malelang, 21-15, 21-18; Joper Escueta trounced Lorenzo Miguel Leonardo, 21-8, 21-10; and Emmanuel Garcia eased past Charlo Tengco, 23-21, 14-21, 27-25, as the Bulldogs swept the singles matches.
They did the same in doubles play as Babad and Escueta drubbed Malelang and Roberto Pineda, 21-11, 21-11, and the duo of Oba-ob and Aries Delos Santos thumped Tengco and Jon Masongsong, 21-13, 21-9.
Both Ateneo and National University share the top spot with identical 2-0 slates.
In other men’s ties, De La Salle and Far Eastern University both posted commanding 5-0 victories as they outplayed University of the East and Adamson University, respectively.
La Salle, Far Eastern University and University of the Philippines now have similar 1-1 cards, while both the Warriors and Falcons fell to 0-2.
