ATENEO and defending champion National University battle separate rivals as they eye their first win in UAAP Season 78 seniors basketball tournament on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Blue Eagles face the Adamson Falcons at 2 p.m., while the Bulldogs take on University of the East Warriors in the 4 p.m. second game in a weekend doubleheader featuring losing teams from last week’s opening weekend.
Ateneo’s season began on a sour note as the Eagles suffered a 64-88 defeat at the hands of Far Eastern University. Coach Bo Perasol made no effort to hide the fact his team played poorly against the Tamaraws.
“Sadly, with the way we played, I don’t think we’re going to go anywhere. We need to do more or else the stronger teams are just going to play us around,” said Perasol.
Kiefer Ravena scored 25 points for Ateneo but only got support from Gwyne Capacio, the only other player in double-digits for the team with 14 points.
“We need to be better than what we showed if we are to accomplish our goals," Perasol added.
Adamson, meanwhile, was in contention for a win on opening day before bowing to University of Santo Tomas, 70-64.
For its part, NU is also looking for a bounce-back win as the reigning champions started its title-retention bid on the wrong foot, bowing to De La Salle, 63-67.
The Bulldogs are up against a Warriors side which went down to University of the Philippines, 55-62.
