ATENEO consultant Tab Baldwin rued the Blue Eagles’ rebounding and defensive flaws in their defeat against National University.
The Blue Eagles were outplayed by the Bulldogs, 70-60, to suffer their first loss of UAAP Season 79 on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Baldwin particularly noted the third quarter as the reason for their downfall after Ateneo’s poor defense allowed NU to dictate the pace with its running game. In turn, the Bulldogs outscored the Blue Eagles 20-9 in that canto.
“Third quarter, we let ourselves down,” said Baldwin. “We missed some good shots and our defense didn’t show up on the other end. That’s the big issue.”
“We are going to be an up-and-down team particularly offensively but we can’t be an up-and-down team defensively without fouling. We got ourselves a hole and we can’t dig out,” he added.
The Gilas Pilipinas head coach also rued the rebounding disparity with the Blue Eagles only getting 39 against the Bulldogs’ 46.
“Big issue for us,” said Baldwin, referring to rebounding. “We are not big and we are very young but we need to learn to be aggressive without fouling. We got to learn how to apply the right sort of aggression according to the UAAP rules and stay out of foul trouble. It’s a process.”
