INJURIES continue to hound the Ateneo Blue Eagles. Now it has claimed their best player, Kiefer Ravena.
Ateneo’s top star tweeted on Saturday that he will miss the Blue Eagles’ season opener against National University on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Ravena wrote: “Missing my First ever UAAP game tomorrow and its opening day. But excited for the new blue eagles to show what we've got! #ProveThemWrong”
Ateneo coach Bo Perasol confirmed that Ravena indeed suffered a right ankle sprain that will force him to miss their opener against National University.
Perasol, however, said that the injury will only be a short-term setback for Ravena who he expects to be back on Wednesday.
“I think he will be ready for Wednesday,” Perasol said. “I don’t want to jeopardize his long-term career by allowing him to play if he is not totally healed.”
The injury came at a time when they will be facing the Bulldogs, one of the top contenders in the league.
“Against the highly-touted team, the other players will have to step up their game in order for us to have a chance. It will be a test of resolve for those who are left to play,” said Perasol.
The five-time defending champion had been hard hit by injuries in the preseason, the reason they had to pull out of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup playoffs.
The biggest victim was JP Erram, who had an MCL injury early in the preseason, and was followed by other big man GBoy Babilonia and Kris Porter.
Von Pessumal also suffered an injury in his right hand but is expected to be healthy for Sunday.
