WHEN La Salle locks horns with Ateneo once again on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 basketball tournament, the Archers will look to duplicate what the Eagles did 15 years ago — prevent an elims sweep.

A La Salle squad led by Mac Cardona and Mike Cortez was on its way to a perfect regular season record as it went 13-0 but lost to the Blue Eagles featuring Wesley Gonzales and Larry Fonacier, 76-63, and failed in the bid to take an outright finals spot.

La Salle went on to beat University of Sto. Tomas in the Final Four, arranging a showdown with La Salle faced an Ateneo squad that eliminated a University of the East squad led by James Yap.

The Blue Eagles won the series opener, the Archers tied it in Game Two, but Ateneo won the decider.

Will history repeat itself or will Ateneo complete a sweep on Sunday?

The Ateneo-La Salle match is set at 4 p.m.

Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga said the sweep is the farthest in their minds.

“That’s been our mindset and we won’t change anything. The mere fact that it’s Ateneo-La Salle, that’s what we are going to focus on, and not necessarily a sweep.

“An Ateneo-La Salle game is big enough already. That’s what we are going to focus, our opponent in La Salle,” Arespacochaga said.

“Our record that we’ve done in the past doesn’t matter.  What matters is the next game. We are going to prepare against La Salle,” said Arespacochaga.

La Salle, meanwhile, is going for a sweep of the second round and looking to force a Final Four, instead of a stepladder playoff.

“Our record that we’ve done in the past doesn’t matter. What matters is the next game. We are going to prepare against La Salle,” said Arespacochaga.
