THE UAAP board spared Ateneo from a forfeiture but has ordered Eagles coach Bo Perasol to serve his one-game suspension again after showing up for Sunday's match against University of the East.

The decision was reached during a marathon regular board meeting on Thursday that saw representatives from the eight member schools decide not to impose sanctions on Ateneo after Perasol broke league rules by being at the venue during the Blue Eagles’ 77-72 victory over the Red Warriors.

As a result of the decision, Perasol will have to miss out on the Eagles' do-or-die match against University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday.

“Coach Bo was in the game venue when he was supposed to be serving his suspension, that is why the board decided that he should be serving the penalty (again),” said UAAP secretary treasurer Malou Isip, who spoke on behalf of the league board.

[A poll done by Spin.ph showed 72.54 percent of 947 respondents felt Ateneo's win should have been forfeited. Only 10.45 percent said the result should be retained, 11.83 percent favored a rematch, while 5.17 percent said the two teams should be declared losers. To vote on new poll, click here]

UE had asked the board to probe Perasol's presence at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday despite being banned for one game for his run-in with a fan in the Eagles' previous game against De La Salle.

But Ateneo countered with a letter seeking an investigation into the presence of Red Warrior Ralf Olivares behind the UE bench despite serving his second game of his two-match suspension on Sunday.

The Blue Eagles' victory ousted the Red Warriors from the Final Four picture with the victory - a result that will now stand as a result of the board's decision.

The league said in a statement that UE was not after a forfeiture of Sunday’s match but only sought a clarification of the situation.

However, league rules call for forfeiture of won games for such infractions. The rules are also clear that banned coaches are not allowed to be at the venue while suspended players should not be on the bench or its "immediate vicinity."

Isip clarified that Perasol is not being given another suspension but was merely asked to serve the original ban for Ateneo’s next game against the UST Tigers, which will most likely decide the Final Four fate of last season's two finalists.

Meanwhile, no sanctions were meted on Olivares for being near the UE bench while serving the second game of his two-match suspension during the same match.
