KIEFER Ravena scored 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Ateneo defeated Far Eastern University, 81-78, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ravena scored 10 of the Blue Eagles’ final 13 points to help hold off the rallying Tamaraws and lift Ateneo to solo second place in the team standings with a 4-1 win-loss slate.
Ravena scored seven straight points to turn a 68-66 lead into a 75-66 edge - the biggest lead enjoyed by either team in the game - with nearly one minute to play.
A steady stream of free throws also kept Ateneo's head above water before FEU's late comeback ended with Mike Tolomia missing a halfcourt heave at the buzzer.
“I think I like the way we played the game until the last two minutes. We should have finished it better. But a win is a win for us,” Ateneo coach Bo Perasol said.
“Kiefer delivered for us at crunch time,” he added of his star guard, who atoned for a 3-of-20 performance in a loss to the National University Bulldogs last week.
Chris Newsome had 17 points while Nico Elorde and Von Pessumal added 12 each for the Blue Eagles, who are now half-a-game behind solo leader National University (5-1).
The Tamaraws dropped to 3-2 win-loss, joining La Salle for fourth place in the standings.
Mark Belo had a team-high 22 points while Tolomia got 15 for the Taamraws. Anthony Hargrove had 13 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.
