FAR Eastern University banked on a huge rally in the fourth quarter to formally give University of the East the boot in the UAAP Season 80 with a 79-63 win on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Birthday boy Arvin Tolentino conspired with Prince Orizu and Jasper Parker in draining critical baskets in that stretch to create separation from the Red Warriors after the third quarter ended with the two teams tied at 49.
Tolentino’s four-point play gave the Tamaraws a double digit lead, 70-57, with 3:27 to go before Parker put the final touches by draining two three pointers, the last one giving FEU a 79-62 lead with just a little over a minute to go.
With the win, the Tamaraws added pressure on the UP Fighting Maroons as they took provisional solo fourth with a 6-6 record.
The Maroons, playing Adamson at posting time, is behind by half a game with a 5-6 record.
The Red Warriors dropped to 3-10 as they formally bowed out of contention in the tournament.
“After that loss to UP, we really needed this win. We need more wins in our remaining games but I think this is a good confidence booster for us going to the home stretch,” said FEU coach Olsen Racela.
“I’m just proud of the way they played in the second half. They didn’t have a good first half but the second half was much much better,” he added.
Parker finished with 18 points and eight assists as Prince Orizu added 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks while Tolentino scored seven of his 10 points in the final period.
Alvin Pasaol scored 18 points on 6 of 19 shooting and turned the ball over eight times.
Mark Olayon added 14 points and six assists but no other Red Warrior breached double digits.
