LONGTIME Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga has been given a new and presumably lighter role as consultant with the Blue Eagles as he concentrates on his job as first assistant coach of Norman Black at Talk ’N Text.

Ateneo team manager Epok Quimpo said Arespacochaga’s need to focus on the Tropang Texters was part of the reason Ronnie Magsanoc was hired as first assistant coach of the Blue Eagles.

Magsanoc, who led San Beda to the 2012 NCAA crown in his only season with Red Lions, has recently joined the Ateneo coaching staff headed by Bo Perasol.

While Arespacochaga is Black’s top lieutenant at Talk ’N Text, Magsanoc is still below the pecking order at Meralco with Jong Uichico holding the job as main assistant of head coach Ryan Gregorio.

“We also took note that some of our coaches are coaching in the PBA. Coach Sandy is the first assistant of coach Norman. Therefore, we have an opening for the first assistant position,” said Quimpo.

“Coach Sandy will still be a consultant,” said Quimpo, although he did not mention a specific job description.

Arespacochaga has been one of the longest tenured members the Ateneo basketball program.

A former Blue Eagle in the nineties, Arespacochaga was the head coach of the team in 2004 before sliding down to being the top assistant to Black.

When Black left Ateneo to rejoin Talk ’N Text, Arespacochaga was one of the top candidates to take over the vacant position that eventually went to Bo Perasol for the 2012 season.
