Archers hero LA Revilla the last to sign up among record 85 rookie hopefuls

Oct 18, 2013
LA Revilla joined a talent-laden batch of guards that included reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Terrence Romeo, Gilas cadet player RR Garcia, and University of Santo Tomas star Jeric Teng. Jerome Ascano

A WEEK after helping De La Salle win the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball championship, Green Archers starting playmaker LA Revilla decided to try his luck in the PBA annual rookie draft.

The veteran guard was the last player to beat Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline for the filing of application forms at the pro league’s office in Libis, Quezon City.

A total of 85 rookie hopefuls signed up for the November 3 event at the Robinson’s Place Malate - the biggest number of draftees since 2003 when Mike Cortez was named the top pick overall among 63 applicants.

The cat-quick Revilla joined a talent-laden batch of guards that included reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Terrence Romeo, Gilas cadet player RR Garcia, University of Santo Tomas star Jeric Teng, Adamson's Alex Nuyles, among others.

Revilla made a successful basketball comeback after being diagnosed with diabetes and hyperthyroidism in 2009, which forced him to miss the next two UAAP seasons.

He made quite an impact on his return to college basketball, submitting averages of 4.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the Finals where he got most of the minutes at the point guard position for the Archers.

He nailed one of two free throws in the dying seconds of Game Three to help the Green Archers clinch their first UAAP crown since 2007 with a pulsating 71-69 win.

Despite the strong cast of guards in the rookie pool, former Ateneo star center and Gilas cadet Greg Slaughter, former San Sebastian big man Ian Sangalang and Letran’s star slotman Raymund Almazan remain the hands-down top three picks.

Below is the complete and official list of draft applicants.
