Out with MoA as Big Dome gets right to host winner-take-all duel between FEU and NU for UAAP men's cage title

    Oct 10, 2014

THE deciding Game Three of the UAAP men’s basketball Finals between Far Eastern University and National University is heading back to the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The league officially announced on Friday the Big Dome will be hosting the winner-take-all showdown between the Tamaraws and Bulldogs set on Wednesday.

Araneta management invoked its right in the contract it had with the league stating that ‘two of a possible three games (in the Finals) will be played at the Big Dome.’

Confusion marred the possible venue of the do-or-die encounter as it had already been announced earlier the Mall of Asia Arena will be the site of Game Three. Official television partner ABS-CBN even announced it on air shortly after the Game Two of the Finals won by the Bulldogs, 62-47.

But host University of the East made a formal statement Thursday night announcing Araneta Coliseum will be hosting Game Three.

That the historic dome in Cubao, Quezon City will be staging the most important game of Season 77 augurs well for the league especially in the aftermath of the record gate attendance registered in Game Two held last Wednesday.

Spin.ph, however, learned from sources the transfer of venue has caused nightmare to the league as problems spurt out one after the other.

For one, the Mall of Asia Arena has already issued tickets for Game Three to their sponsors.

This developed as an official from one of the two teams competing in the Finals blasted the transfer of the venue right in the middle of the title series.

The official, who refused to be named, said the issue only mirrored the need for the UAAP to be finally handled by a sports management firm and not its member schools on a rotating basis.

“Rotating hosts system has outlived its use. UAAP needs to be run by professionals in event management, sports marketing, etc,” said the official.
