ALVIN Patrimonio was given a 'godfather offer' by National University, a school that has been close to his heart, as the four-time PBA MVP became the big man coach for the Bulldogs.

After leaving the same post for University of Santo Tomas last season, Patrimonio received an offer from NU coach Eric Altamirano to join the coaching staff and help the Bulldogs bigs.

And it turned out to be an offer he can't refuse since Patrimonio has long had a good bond with Altamirano, tracing back to 1997 when the then rookie coach took over the helm of Purefoods.

“I got a call from Coach Eric. Alam mo naman si Coach Eric, naging mentor ko siya sa Purefoods, ka-church ko [pa]," he said.

Incidentally, Patrimonio’s daughters Anna Christine and Anna Clarice are also part of NU's multi-titled women’s tennis team in the UAAP.

“My daughters, nasa NU rin. So why not? Para makatulong sa mga bigs ng team. Nagpaalam na ako sa UST kasi iba na rin ‘yung naging direction ng team. Nagkaroon naman ng timing na kailangan talaga ng NU ng coach for the bigs,” said Patrimonio.

The PBA legend has been with the team since April and has been regularly joining the team’s practices. He said he likes to help as he sees himself as a good fit to help the Bulldogs since they have several big men on the team.

“The battle cry is the post kasi kailangang ma-maximize nila ‘yung opportunity sa post dahil nasa team sila Alfred Aroga, Matthew Aquino, at iba pang mga bigs. Nabigyan ako ng opportunity,” said Patrimonio, who sat near the bench of the team when they won their debut in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup over College of Saint Benilde, 59-54, on Wednesday.

So far, Patrimonio is happy with what he sees with the players, saying that some of the moves that he has been teaching is being applied in the game.

“Nag-enjoy naman lahat. May mga natututunan silang mga moves na situational. Kailangan lang ng exposure and this is the right time, ‘yung Filoil, na ma-apply ‘yung natututunan nila,” said Patrimonio.
