UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas has three games left in its elimination-round schedule, and co-captain Aljon Mariano believes they can still salvage the season and make it to the Final Four.
In danger of missing the Final Four for the first time since 2011, the Tigers are in sixth place with a 5-6 win-loss record.
But Mariano said the back-to-back runners-up are still capable of winning their final three games and get a shot at the semifinal round.
“Sinabi lang namin sa isa’t-isa na kailangan naming mag-stick together kasi meron pa kaming three games. May chance pa kami mag-Final Four,” said Mariano.
Mariano scored 12 points for UST but fell to Ateneo, 69-58, in its last outing. Bu after the weekend games, UST still has a slim chance with National University (7-4) losing to University of the East (6-5).
“Siyempre masakit. Lahat naman ng talo, masakit. Medyo may mga lapses kami nung fourth quarter. Hindi kami nakasabay transition. Doon sila naka-score ng marami,” said Mariano.
Mariano has reason to be optimistic with the season not yet over — even though UST will need to go through La Salle on Saturday, NU on September 10, and UE on September 16.
“May chance pa kami sa Final Four. Para sa akin, maipanalo lang namin ’yung tatlong games, we will see what happens. Manalo kami ng tatlong games para mataas pa rin ang morale namin,” said Mariano.
Mariano is also happy the UST community still came in droves in its game against Ateneo.
“Marami pa rin nanood sa amin. Kailangan pa rin namin ipakita ’yung puso namin at school pride namin para maging mataas ang morale ng team namin para sa mga sumusuporta sa amin,” said Mariano.
