ALEX Cabagnot is having the time of his life as part of the coaching staff of University of the Philippines in the UAAP.

The 33-year-old San Miguel said he volunteered to help when Bo Perasol became head coach of the Maroons. He has since come onboard as the skills coach of the UP guards.

“I asked coach Bo if I can help UP in anyway possible and he assigned me to the skills of the guards,” said Cabagnot, who declined to put a label on his role with Maroons.

“I’m part of the staff,” said Cabagnot with a smile.

It is actually a reunion of sorts for Perasol and Cabagnot, who played under the first-year UP coach during his time in charge with Coca-Cola in the PBA from 2008 to 2009.

Coaching is actually right down Cabagnot’s alley. For nearly a decade, Cabagnot has been holding sports clinics with his Edge Basketball International program in the United States.

Cabagnot said he wants to be a head coach someday when his playing career is over.

“Hopefully,” Cabagnot said when asked if he wants to be a head coach someday.

“I’ve been wanting to do this,” Cabagnot added. “It’s (Edge basketball) been going on for the last eight to nine years teaching young kids from 10 to 17 years old. It’s just another progression in my career.”

Despite his busy schedule with the Beermen, Cabagnot said he is making a conscious effort to regularly attend UP practices.

“I made an effort to have a rapport with the guys. It’s not going to be fair with them to show up once every two weeks. I pretty much show up two or three times a week depending on the San Miguel schedule,” said Cabagnot.

Cabagnot said having Perasol as one of his mentors is a good start to his coaching career.

“I’m learning from coach Bo. I knew how patient he was. I knew how understanding and very diligent he was. He is a great coach to learn from," Cabagbnot said.
