ALDIN Ayo is now in the process of building his coaching staff at University of Santo Tomas with the announcement of his appointment as Tigers coach set to happen on January 11.
Sources said Ayo is now speaking to coaches who can potentially join him at UST, some of whom he is eyeing to play a major role in the entire basketball program of the Tigers.
This search became necessary, sources added, as only one member of Ayo's staff from La Salle in McJour Luib will be able to join him in the move to UST.
Luib, a former player of Ayo at Letran, is set to become the coach of UST in the Passerelle division (under-15).
Another source bared that one of Ayo’s new assistant coaches will also take over UST’s juniors basketball team. The source added current juniors basketball coach Chris Cantonjos is not expected to be renewed for next season, regardless of the result of the Tiger Cubs' campaign in Season 80.
One of the names previously reportedly being eyed for the Tiger Cubs post, Miggy Solitaria,is out of the race since he’s not joining Ayo in UST, sources added.
The 40-year-old Ayo has been given full control over UST’s basketball program, which was something that sources said he had hoped to get in his two-year stint with La Salle.
This authority has led him to focus on forming a strong support staff from the seniors down to the high school division as he looks to revive a basketball program that last won a UAAP seniors crown in 2006, and the UAAP juniors title in 2001.
Time, however, is on Ayo’s side as he confirmed to The Varsitarian that he will be coaching the Tigers for the "next six years."
The NCAA and UAAP champion coach also brings his championship experience in the coaching ranks to UST, with Ayo leading Letran to the crown in 2015 and taking La Salle back on the throne a year later.
