LOUIE Alas on Sunday said he is "flattered" to be on the short list Ateneo is considering as the school searches for a replacement for Norman Black as the next Blue Eagles coach.
“Flattering on my side but kinda hard to comment,” Alas said in an SMS message to Spin.ph.
Alas has been approached for one of the most high-profile coaching positions in college sports, joining fellow Alaska assistant coach Alex Compton, Adamson head coach Leo Austria, and current Blue Eagles assistant coaches Sandy Arespacochaga and Jamike Jarin on the candidates list.
Alas has announced that he will no longer coach Letran next season after leading the Knights to the NCAA Finals against San Beda, although Letran officials are reportedly not giving up hope that they could talk him into staying put.
Meantime, Austria said news that Ateneo is interested in hiring him is nothing new to him, even as he pointed out that he still has one year left in his three-year contract with Adamson.
Austria confirmed that representatives from Ateneo's search committee had been making overtures since two years ago.
“Since two years ago, may kumakausap na sa akin na close sa administration,” said Austria. “Alam mo naman, may nagpaparamdam na mga alumni dahil may mga kaibigan rin ako na nasa search committee.”
“(But) I still have a one-year contract with Adamson,” Austria said.
Incidentally, Leo’s son Bacon played for the Blue Eagles up to 2011.
