JENSEN Ilagan has been tapped as the commissioner for the basketball tournaments in UAAP Season 82.
Ilagan, 37, is the technical director of the Asean Basketball League and will oversee the cage competitions this year for the country's premier collegiate league.
"I'm humbled to be the new UAAP Commissioner. I will do my best to uphold the league's integrity through fair competition," he said.
The men's and women's competitions will start on Sept. 4, with the boys and the newly introduced girls tourneys set to follow in the second semester.
Ilagan is planning to introduce the "Video Review Initiative" this year, where every member of the officiating pool will be mandated to review the games that were played after every game day.
"If it's a good game, it will be the standard. If it's a bad game, then it will serve as a lesson for the officials as well," said the commissioner, who has served the ABL post for the past four years and boasts of a degree in Commerce from Asia Pacific College. He is also a FIBA-certified table official.
"His experience working in the ABL made us decide to tap him as our Commissioner," said UAAP President Emmanuel Fernandez of host Ateneo. "His youth will bring more technological advancements to our league this season."
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag added: "I commend the UAAP's choice, spearheaded by this season's host, as we continue to open our doors to candidates other than the traditional names in basketball. But such a risk, if it may even be called such, is not without calculation."
Ilagan succeeds Junel Baculi, who held the post this past UAAP Season 81.
Also assisting Ilagan for the men's division will be LA Mumar, who was appointed as the tournament director.
He is a former Ateneo Blue Eagle who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies. Mumar is also a former high school athletics director for Lyceum-Cavite.
