UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas joined reigning champion Far Eastern University and last year’s runner-up National University in the win column at the start of the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Tiger Cubs beat University of the Philippines Integrated School, 97-62, to open their campaign on a high note. The Baby Tamaraws defeated De La Salle-Zobel, 71-67, while the Bullpups won over University of the East, 107-69.
John Cansino exploded with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Kobe Palencia added 23 points for the Tiger Cubs, who also got 18 rebounds from Batang Gilas standout John Bismarck Lina.
Ljhay Gonzales had 16 points, six rebounds, and seven assists as the Baby Tamaraws overcame a comeback bid of the Junior Archers in the fourth period.
Matthew Manalang contributed 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals, while Rhayyan Amsali had 12 points and 10 rebounds to give new head coach Goldwin Monteverde his first win as an NU mentor.
