PLENTY of questions will be answered once the dust settles after the final playdate in the elimination round of the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament on Sunday at the Blue Eagle gym.
SPIN.ph breaks down the scenarios for the remaining five teams in contention to move into the next round—Ateneo, National University, Far Eastern University, Adamson, and University of Santo Tomas
The Blue Eaglets of Kai Sotto and SJ Belangel lead the pack with a 13-0 record, the same mark their seniors counterparts did last year. With the win on Sunday against NU in its 3 p.m. match, Ateneo will get an easy route to the crown, automatically advancing to the finals for sweeping the elimination round, a feat the Blue Eagles were unable to do during their championship run.
The Bullpups of Rhayyan Amsali are assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four as they hold an 11-2 record. While already holding an incentive regardless of whether the next round becomes a Final Four or stepladder, NU could get a psychological advantage if ever they meet again in the finals with a win over Ateneo in their 3 p.m. game.
The Baby Tamaraws of L-Jay Gonzales and RJ Abarrientos face UST in what is a no-bearing match for the squad as they are locked in third place regardless of the result. FEU-Diliman, however, will definitely want to end the elimination with momentum following close wins over De La Salle-Zobel and Adamson over the past games.
The Baby Falcons are tied at fourth place with UST going into the final game of the eliminations. One thing going for the Joem Sabandal-led Adamson team is a relatively light schedule as the Baby Falcons take on De La Salle-Zobel (3-10) at 11 a.m.
The Tiger Cubs have struggled, having lost five of their last six games heading into their match against FEU at 1 p.m. CJ Cansino and the Santo Tomas crew, however, can still enter the Final Four with a win over the Baby Tamaraws and a loss by Adamson. A playoff for the fourth spot, however, ensues if both teams will still end up in a tie after Sunday’s matches.
