    RJ Abarrientos shows way as FEU edges Adamson in UAAP Jrs

    FAR Eastern University survived a scare from Adamson University, 80-72, on Sunday to take solo second second spot in the UAAP Season 81 juniors’ basketball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

    JB Sajonia scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the payoff period and had six rebounds, two assists and two steals as FEU improved its win-loss record to 6-2.

    RJ Abarrientos had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Royce Alforque scored 15 points on top of six assists.

    Abarrientos hit a corner triple that gave FEU a 73-67 lead with three minutes to play.

    “As a veteran para sa Baby Tamaraws, kasi yung finofocus namin talaga yung mga beterano kumbaga yung paano maging leader sa team,” said Abarrientos.

    “So sinabi ko sa kanila umpisa pa lang na kailangan kami magstep up para sumunod lahat.”

    “Siyempre credit din sa ibang teammates namin na tumutulong sa amin hindi namin magagawa yun kung wala sila,” he added.

    The Allan Albano-coached Baby Tams ended the three-game winning streak of the Baby Falcons. They take on De La Salle-Zobel (3-4) on Wednesday.

    Adam Doria hit two triples to put Adamson ahead, 54-53, in the fourth quarter.

    Sajonia scored seven in a 9-2 run that gave FEU a 68-61 lead with five minutes to play.

    AP Manlapaz scoring six straight points as Adamson cut the lead to three, 70-67, before Abarrientos hit the big triple.

    Manlapaz and JM Sabandal scored 17 points each for Adamson, which remained in solo fourth place with a 5-3 card.

    The Baby Falcons try to regain their winning ways against UPIS (0-7) on Wednesday.

    University of Santo Tomas got another big game from rookie Mark Nonoy, beating University of the East, 85-63.

    Nonoy recorded his second triple-double of the season, scoring 27 points, pulling down 12 rebounds and making 11 assists.

    JB Lina had 15 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks as UST improved to 4-4 for fifth place.

    UST next faces Nazareth School of National University (6-1), while UE battles Ateneo (5-2).

    The Junior Warriors suffered their seventh loss in eight games.
