EMERGING young star Echo Laure will not be going to Ateneo and instead will play for National University, according to a social media post by his parents on Thursday.
The 14-year-old son of former PBA player Eddie and wife Jovie last played for University of Santo Tomas and was recently named Jr. NBA Ambassador of the Philippines.
Talk of the young Laure's move to Ateneo grew louder after a picture showing the 6-foot-3 prodigy and his family with Ateneo officials led by Blue Eagles team manager Epok Quimpo circulated on social media.
The Laures even bared their pride over their son passing the Ateneo entrance exam.
However, Laure's parents said they chose NU so the teenager can be close to sisters EJ and Eya, who both play University of Santo Tomas in UAAP volleyball.
“As much as we want you to play and study in Ateneo, ayaw naman namin malayo ka sa mg ate mo at di ka namin matutukan," said the Laure couple on their Facebook page.
At the same time, the Laures expressed hope that playing for new NU Bullpups coach Goldwin Monteverde will put him on track to realizing his dream of playing in the PBA like his dad.
Monteverde, a multi-titled juniors coach, has recently taken over an NU high school program that has won three UAAP titles the last few years.
"Ayaw din namin masacrifice ang dream mo to become a professional basketball player that’s why we chose NU under coach Goldwin and company for you,” wrote the Laure couple.
