    NU Bullpups rout Ateneo Blue Eaglets to complete first-round sweep

    DEFENDING champion National University-Nazareth School swept the first round of the UAAP Season 82 boys' basketball tournament after decimating Ateneo, 102-71, Sunday at Paco Arena.

    Carl Tamayo led NU with 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field with 13 boards and two blocks, while Terrence Fortea added 20 markers, all scored in the first half.

    The Bullpups went on a 33-14 third quarter barrage, capped by Ernest Felicida's steal and bucket to erect a 33-point margin heading into the final period, 81-48.

    Despite the victory, NU coach Goldwin Monteverde emphasized that his team need to take care of the ball consistently.

    "For one, we have 28 turnovers, that's something we have to work on kasi we have to be consistent din on running our offense and executing what we want to do," the decorated mentor said.

    The Bullpups' lead ballooned to as high as 37 after Kenji Duremdes hit a triple at the 7:46 mark of the payoff period.

    Forthsky Padrigao had 17 points for Ateneo as they fell to 4-3. Lebron Lopez and Josh Lazaro were limited to a poor 11-for-41 clip from the field.

    In the other games, Far Eastern University-Diliman rolled to its sixth-straight win after edging out Adamson University, 89-81, while University of Santo Tomas broke out of its three-game skid after a 68-65 squeaker against De La Salle-Zobel.

    Penny Estacio had 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, while Chiolo Anonuevo contributed 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting as the Baby Tamaraws moved to 6-1.

    "Yung six wins namin, galing lahat sa butas ng karayom. Marami pa rin kaming kailangang iimprove especially sa defense at decision making para yung mga panalo naman namin hindi katulad nito na ang hirap i-earn," said FEU coach Allan Albano.

    John Figueroa unloaded 21 points and 11 boards but the Baby Falcons slid to 4-3.

    Junior Archers John Quimado, John Dalisay and Jon Cudiamat all flunked their three-point attempts in the waning seconds which could have tied the game.

    Bismarck Lina registered 15 points and eight rebounds while backcourt duo Jethro Escoto and Jacob Cortez got 14 markers apiece as the Tiger Cubs improved to 3-4 for solo fifth place.

    Rey Tupas had 14 points while Kean Baclaan dropped 13 as DLSZ slipped to 2-5, tied for sixth seed with UE.

    Baclaan hit the showers early as he was ejected at the 5:53 mark of the payoff period after incurring his second technical foul.

    In the curtain-raiser, CJ Austria was unstoppable as University of the East outlasted winless University of the Philippines Integrated School, 77-70.

    Austria exploded for 39 points on 13-of-22 clip from the field and 11-of-16 shooting from the stripe to go along with 17 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a rejection as UE rose to 2-5.

    Jean Canillas and Sean Torculas unleashed double-doubles in points and rebounds for the Junior Maroons (0-7), 15-16 and 15-18, respectively.
