TWO teams from the Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) easily advanced to the semifinals of their respective divisions in the 24th Asean Seniors Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in Kuching, Malaysia.
The squad in the 50 years division was first to make it to the semifinals after a 67-49 rout of Indonesia’s Pontiana in Group B action that saw Achit Kaw explode for 28 points at the MBKS Stadium.
The win came after a scary 62-56 victory over fellow title contender Kuala Lumpur in the opener on Tuesday.
Kaw, who made most of his baskets through the help of former Letran star guard Jerry Gonzales and Andrew Ongteco, was ably supported by former PBA player Sonny Cabatu and Benet Palad, who combined for 22 points.
The FCVBA squad in the 40 years division scored an 83-66 win over Kuala Lumpur for its second straight victory in Group B.
Both teams are already assured of semis berths even if they drop their last games in their respective group elims.
Also gunning for a semis berth and a sweep of its group elims is the 60 years team of Rain or Shine co-team owner Terry Que and Ironcon Builders’ Jimi Lim.
