NCAA champion San Beda College streaked to its third straight win by clobbering Letran, 77-57, to reach the quarterfinals of the inaugural Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) on Monday at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym in Manila.
Drawing another stellar performance from former Philippine Youth standout Arvie Tolentino, the Red Cubs leaned on a fiery first-quarter onslaught to take the sting out of the Squires and stay unbeaten in Group B.
Tolentino also had 12 boards for the Red Cubs, who posted their biggest lead at 62-34 going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
NCAA Finals MVP Jayvee Mocon ably backed up Tolentino in the event supported by Wrangler, Welcoat House Paints, Ironcon Builders, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Dickies Underwear, MEC Networks, Blackwater Sports and Hapee Toothpaste.
In other games, UAAP champion Far Eastern University rebounded from a stunning 66-58 loss to San Sebastian by downing Ateneo, 73-70, reigning Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) champion Chiang Kai Shek College shocked the SSC Staglets, 81-75, in overtime and Hope Christian High School outlasted National University, 61-50.
The Dragons leaned on the heroics of Kimlee Bayquin (21 points, 9 rebounds), John Gallego (18 pts.) and Joshua Tan (14 pts) to hand the Staglets their first defeat in three games and keep their quarterfinals hopes alive.
Jollo Go led the Hope Christians with 20 points, including five triples. He was ably backed by Clint Doliquez who had 13 points and 18 boards.
The loss was the third in as many outings for the Bullpups, putting their quarterfinals bid in peril.
