KUCHING, Malaysia — The three teams of the Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) outclassed their respective rivals to advance to the finals of their divisions in the 24th ASEAN Seniors Basketball Tournament Friday here.
The 60-year squad, getting another big lift from former La Salle star Kenneth Yap, was the first to book a championship ticket with a 35-22 drubbing of host Hornbill in the first crossover semis of the day.
The 6-foot-3 Yap used his height advantage to the hilt to collect eight straight points from the free throw area, enough to disarm the host squad as it raced to a 22-13 lead.
It was an all FCVBA show from there as 70-year-old Zotico Tan, Israel Catacutan, Julio Cruz, Bong dela Cruz, Jimi Lim, Terry Que, and Danny Co joined the scoring act for the Eduard Tio-mentored team which is aching to reclaim the title it lost two years ago in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Through the efforts of former UST hotshot Bennet Palad, Gerry Tee, Sonny Cabatu, and Jerry Gonzales, the 50s romped to a 63-52 win over the host squad, while the 40s dumped Zaap Sports of Thailand, 102-52.
Jack Santiago, Jean Alabanza, Atchit Kaw, Estong Ballesteros, Benny Cheng, and Louie Kaw set the tone for the team’s fourth straight blowout win by dropping 26 points right in the opening period while holding their rivals to just five points in the same stretch.
