SAN Beda arranged a Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) title match against Lyceum as the NCAA champions beat UAAP titleholder Ateneo, 57-52, in the semifinals on Monday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Javee Mocon had 22 points, while Donald Tankoua had 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Red Lions pulled off the semifinal victory over the Blue Eagles.
San Beda will face LPU in the PCCL finals on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. It will be a rematch of the NCAA Season 93 championship series won by the Red Lions via sweep.
The Red Lions played without Robert Bolick after suffering a knee injury, but still made key plays down the stretch in his absence.
“I really commend my players for stepping up in the [absence] of Robert,” San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez said. “It is really a big shoes to fill with Robert out.”
Tankoua broke a 52-52 deadlock with a steal on Matt Nieto and a reverse lay-up with 51.2 seconds left in the fourth. The Red Lions kept that slim lead as the Blue Eagles failed to score their next possessions.
Thirdy Ravena had 11 points and eight rebounds, but was the lone double-digit scorer in the Ateneo defeat.
Still, the Blue Eagles were up 44-39 at the start of the fourth period only for San Beda to build a 7-0 run all on baskets by Mocon, setting up the tight contest.
“Ateneo played bad but they still came out and really gave us a fight,” said Fernandez.
