TAGUIG reclaimed the National Basketball League-Pilipinas crown, overhauling a 20-point deficit to defeat La Union, 94-92, on Saturday at the San Juan Multi-Purpose Center in La Union.

Mike Sampurna led the fightback, finishing with 19 points as the Generals completed the sweep of the best-of-three championship series.

Taguig overcame a 57-37 deficit early in the third quarter to bag its second crown. Noel Santos had 11 points and 12 rebounds and drained a basket with 32.8 seconds left to grab a 93-92 gap and take the lead for good.

The Generals won their first title in 2019.

“It’s long overdue,” said Taguig coach Bing Victoria. “Tagal naming pinaghirapan. Sinuklian ng nasa taas yung paghihirap namin. We don’t have holidays. Tinrabaho talaga namin ito. Christmas, New Year, walang off. Sobrang thankful ako na nagbunga ‘yung pinaghirapan namin.”

Taguig finished the eliminations at second place, and defeated Bulacan in the semifinals also in a sweep.

La Union, on the other hand, placed second for the third time in the regional league for homegrown talents.

Jonats Lontoc had 14 points and five rebounds, and Fidel Castro had 12 points for the Generals.

Sampurna led the bench mob as they collected 45 bench points to help the Generals in the come-from-behind win.

“Very sweet. Ngayon lang kami naging health lahat. Sa team talaga, importante hanggang 15, umiikot. ‘Yung 12 ko, almost struggling pero ‘yung two na binunot ko worked wonders,” said Victoria, referring to seldom-used players Keeno Alcantara and Mark Gabiran.

Erven Silverie had 20 points, while Jap Pambid collected 18 points for La Union in the defeat at home, its first after five games.
